If you shop Steve Madden online, you will see the same instruction over and over: if you are between sizes, order the next size up. It appears on the US size page, on the UK size page and again in the product fit tips. That one rule explains most returns, so it is worth understanding before you click buy. This guide gives you the women’s and men’s conversion charts Steve Madden publishes, with US, UK, EU, inches and centimeters, then covers the things the charts do not show: why the US and UK sites list different UK numbers for the same shoe, what the brand says about widths, calf size and extended sizes, and how to choose between sizes on heels, boots and sandals.

Quick answer: On Steve Madden’s US chart, women’s US 8 = UK 6 = EU 38-39 for a foot 24.1 cm (9.5 in) long. For men, US 9 = UK 8.5 = EU 42 for a foot 26 cm (10.25 in) long. Steve Madden says some styles run smaller or larger than its regular sizing, and recommends ordering a half size up if you are between sizes unless the product page says otherwise.

Sizes come from Steve Madden’s size charts. Women’s UK sizes follow its US site; the UK site shows slightly different UK numbers, explained below.

Widths

B and D only

Women’s are width B, men’s are width D. Some boots have wide calf options.

Room at the toe

The Rule Steve Madden Repeats: Go Up Half a Size When You Are Between Sizes

Both Steve Madden size pages carry the same advice. If you wear a half size and a style is only made in whole sizes, order the next size up unless the fit tip on the product page says something different. The UK page puts it as “we always recommend ordering a half size up unless stated otherwise.”

That sounds simple, but it only applies when the half size is not available. Many Steve Madden styles are made in half sizes. The US page says most women’s styles come in whole and half sizes from 5 to 10, and many in 11, while some styles are whole sizes only from 5 to 12. For men, most styles come in whole and half sizes from 7 to 13, but some are whole sizes only.

The practical steps: open the product page, look at the size selector, and see whether half sizes are listed. If they are, order your normal half size. If they are not, go up. And if the product page has a fit tip, that overrides everything else on this page.

Steve Madden Women’s Size Chart (US, UK, EU, Inches, CM)

This is the women’s conversion chart from Steve Madden’s US Size and Fit page, covering US 4 to 12. Why Steve Madden’s US and UK Sites Show Different UK Sizes

This is the most useful thing to know if you are shopping from the UK or comparing charts. Steve Madden’s two size pages do not agree on UK numbers. On the US site, women’s US 8 is UK 6. On the UK site, women’s US 8 is UK 5.5. On the US site, US 6 is UK 4, while the UK site lists UK 3 for US 6. At the top of the UK site’s women’s range the two agree again: both show US 10 as UK 8.

The UK page’s US 6 row also lists a foot length of 22.2 cm, which is what the US page lists for US 5.5, so the two charts are not simply the same data with different labels. Steve Madden does not explain the difference.

Our advice: when you shop on a Steve Madden site, use the size labels that site shows, and use the centimeter measurement as a check. If you are comparing the two sites, match by foot length in centimeters, not by UK label. Our US vs UK vs EU shoe size conversion guide explains why UK size labels vary between retailers.

Heels, Boots, Sandals and Sneakers: Style Changes the Fit

Steve Madden says it strives for consistent sizing but “some styles may run smaller or larger than our regular sizing.” That is honest, and it matches how fashion footwear works. The following points are general fitting advice, not Steve Madden statements.

  • High heels. A higher heel shifts your weight forward onto the toes. If you are between sizes, the larger size usually feels better in a pointed toe or a stiletto.
  • Pointed and square toes. A narrow toe box leaves less room than a round one at the same length. The longest toe of a pointed shoe can sit nearer the tip than you expect.
  • Strappy sandals. Fit depends on strap position more than length. A foot that overhangs the sole edge is the sign you should size up.
  • Boots. Length is only part of the picture: calf width and shaft height matter, covered below.
  • Sneakers and platforms. A thick sole can feel clunky if the size is too big, so choose the size that locks your heel.

Always check the product page. Steve Madden’s UK page says to check each product description for fit notes.

Width and Calf Size: What Steve Madden Offers

Steve Madden’s US size page states that all women’s styles are standard width B only, and all men’s styles are standard width D only. There are no separate wide widths on the page. If you have a wider foot, our shoe width guide explains how to measure it. For boots, some women’s styles offer wide calf options. To check if you need one, Steve Madden says to measure your bare calf at its widest point while standing with your foot flat on the ground, then compare it with the calf measurement on the product page.

If a boot is long enough but tight in the calf, a larger foot size will not fix it. Look for a wide calf version instead, or consider a different shaft style such as an ankle boot.

Extended and Small Sizes: Women’s 4 and 12 to 14, Men’s 14 to 17

Steve Madden says some women’s styles come in extended sizes 12 to 14, and some men’s styles come in sizes 14 to 17. Smaller women’s sizes appear on the conversion chart as well: US 4 is UK 2 and EU 35, for a foot of 20.8 cm (8.19 in). Many searches look for these sizes, which tells us shoppers have trouble finding them. The honest answer is that availability depends on the style. Filter by size on the shop pages, and check the product page before you fall in love with a pair.

How to Measure Your Foot for Steve Madden

Steve Madden’s instructions are straightforward. Stand up and wear the socks or stockings you will wear with the shoes. Trace your foot on paper, mark your big toe and your heel, and measure the distance between the two marks. Then use the chart to convert that number into a size. Steve Madden also says there should be about half an inch (roughly 1.3 cm) between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Our how to measure foot size at home guide has more detail. Measure both feet and use the larger one.

Worked Examples Using Steve Madden’s Numbers

  • Foot length 24.1 cm. This matches women’s US 8 on Steve Madden’s chart, which is UK 6 and EU 38-39. If the style you want only comes in whole sizes and you wear an 8.5, go up to 9 (25.1 cm).
  • Foot length 25.4 cm, buying a pointed-toe heel. That is women’s US 9.5 on the chart. If the style is only in whole sizes, Steve Madden’s rule says size up to 10.
  • Men’s foot length 26 cm. That is men’s US 9, UK 8.5, EU 42.
  • Boots with a roomy calf. Choose the size by foot length first, then check the shaft measurement.

Kids’ and Toddler Sizes

Steve Madden’s US page says its kids’ styles run from size 13 to 7, with most in whole sizes from 13 to 5, and toddler styles from size 8 to 12 in whole sizes only. The charts for these sizes are images on the page, so we cannot reproduce exact conversions. For general kids’ conversions, see our kids’ shoe size chart and youth shoe size chart.

Comparing Steve Madden With Other Brands

Use your foot length in centimeters instead of copying a size across brands. If you also wear Dr. Martens, Clarks, Vans or Converse, start from your measurement and read across to Steve Madden’s chart.

What we confirmed and where the two sites differ

  • We copied the women’s conversion chart from Steve Madden’s US Size and Fit page and the men’s chart from the UK size page, then checked each row for US, UK, EU, inches and centimeters.
  • Steve Madden’s US and UK sites give different UK numbers for many of the same women’s US sizes (for example US 8 is UK 6 on the US site and UK 5.5 on the UK site). We use the US site for women’s UK sizes and explain the difference.
  • The shop page says there is no women’s 10.5, but the chart lists one. We show the chart as published and tell you to check the product page.
  • Steve Madden’s charts for kids and toddlers are images, so we do not reproduce exact conversions.
  • Steve Madden does not publish an overall true to size rating. It says some styles run smaller or larger than its regular sizing.
