Sperry Size Chart: Women’s, Men’s & Kids’ Sizes, Widths and Fit Rules

Sperry is one of the brands where width matters as much as length. Its official size page includes a width guide that tells you how far narrow, wide and extra wide differ from standard, and its boat shoes are often sold in regular and wide. People also ask whether Sperrys run big or small, and Sperry’s own answer is that sizing varies by style and that not every style comes in half sizes. This guide puts Sperry’s women’s, men’s, kids’ and slipper charts in one place with US, UK, EU, inches and centimeters, then covers the questions that come with them: how to use the width guide, what to do when your half size is not offered, how Sperry’s men’s and women’s sizes relate, and what to check before you buy online. Many people also search for these as Sperry Top-Sider sizes, and the charts apply to the same brand.

Quick answer: On Sperry’s chart, women’s US 8 = UK 5.5 = EU 39 (25 cm, 9.8 in), and men’s US 9 = UK 8 = EU 42 (27 cm, 10.6 in). Sperry says sizing may vary between style and type of footwear, and that half sizes are not available in all styles. Many styles come in regular and wide widths.

Sperry Width Guide: How Much Wider Is Wide?

Sperry’s size page gives numbers for width, which most brands do not. Compared with regular width, narrow is about 3 mm narrower across the forefoot, wide is about 3 mm wider and extra wide is about 6 mm wider. Sperry adds that “exact width varies by style and last.” The page also says wide-width styles give extra room across the top of the shoe, where your foot naturally bends.

Sperry width guide: difference from regular width
WidthDifference across the forefoot
Narrow (S)About 3 mm narrower
Medium (M)Standard fit
Wide (W)About 3 mm wider
Extra Wide (XW)About 6 mm wider

Source: Sperry size charts page. Differences are approximate.

Two practical points. First, the labels differ between pages: the size chart page uses Narrow, Medium, Wide and Extra Wide, while the product pages we read list Slim, Regular and Wide. Treat them as the same idea, and check the product page for which widths a style actually offers. Second, three millimeters is a small step. If a regular-width shoe pinches across the ball of your foot, wide may solve it. If it only feels short, you need a longer size, not a wider one. Our shoe width guide explains how to measure width.

Do Sperrys Run True to Size, Big or Small?

This is the biggest question people ask about the brand. Sperry does not publish a single true to size rating. Its size page says: “Sizing may vary between style and type of footwear. Half sizes are not available in all styles.” The product pages we read for the Authentic Original 2-Eye and the Songfish did not state a fit rating either, only that you can return unsuitable pairs in store.

So the honest answer is that it depends on the style, and the way to find out is to read the product page and the reviews on the page, then use the chart. If you wear a half size and a style only comes in whole sizes, you have to pick. General fitting advice, not a Sperry rule: boat shoes in leather soften with wear, so a pair that feels snug but not painful across the width often gives a little, while a pair that is too long does not get shorter. When in doubt between two sizes, choose the one that keeps your heel secure.

Sperry’s pages mention free returns in its stores. The Authentic Original page we read also notes a $6.95 shipping fee for mail returns, so check the current policy before ordering.

When Your Half Size Is Not Offered

Sperry sells many styles in half sizes: the Authentic Original 2-Eye page we read lists sizes in half steps from 4 to 16. Others come in whole sizes only. If your size is missing, the best move is to measure. Compare your longer foot with the chart in both inches and centimeters, then ask whether width is the reason you want the larger size. If it is, try the wide version in your whole size, which adds about 3 mm across the forefoot. If length is the reason, go up. Our how to measure foot size at home guide shows how.

Men’s vs Women’s Sperry Sizes

Sperry’s size page includes a rule for converting between men’s and women’s: for traditional women’s sizing, subtract 1.5 from the listed men’s size. Sperry’s own chart is not perfectly consistent with it. By UK and EU numbers, men’s US 7 (UK 6) lines up with women’s US 8.5 (UK 6), which fits the 1.5 rule. By centimeters, men’s US 7 is 25 cm, the same as women’s US 8, which fits a difference of 1. If you are buying across genders, start from the 1.5 rule, then check the centimeter column for your size, and look at the product page for the style. See our men’s to women’s conversion chart for the general rule.

Sperry Women’s Slipper Sizes

Slippers use a small, medium and large system instead of numbered sizes.

If you wear a half size or sit on the boundary, for example a women’s 6.5 or 8.5, check the product page, since the chart gives only these bands.

Sperry Kids’ Size Chart

Sperry’s kids’ chart is more detailed than most. It lists length in inches and centimeters, width in inches, and an approximate age for the whole-number sizes. Use it to size from a measurement rather than from age, which is only a rough guide.

Boat Shoes, Socks and Break-In

Boat shoes are often worn without socks, and the leather conforms to your foot over time. The points below are general fitting advice. Try the shoe on the way you plan to wear it. A shoe worn sockless needs the closest fit, and a shoe worn with socks needs a little more room. Moccasin-style construction with a leather upper tends to feel snug first and relax with wear. A pair that hurts on the first day because of length is the wrong size, not an unbroken pair. Walk around the house on a hard floor and then a carpet before you commit, and keep the packaging until you are sure.

Comparing Sperry With Other Brands

If you wear Vans, Converse, Clarks or Dr. Martens, do not copy that size across. Start from your measured foot and read across to Sperry’s chart and width guide.

What we verified and what Sperry does not state

  • We copied Sperry’s women’s, men’s, kids’ and slipper tables, plus its width guide, from Sperry’s official size charts page. The page does not label the first two tables, so we labeled them women’s and men’s from the tab names and the values.
  • Sperry’s men’s table lists 29 cm for US 10 (out of sequence) and 30 cm and 11.8 inches for both US 12 and 12.5. We show these as published.
  • Sperry’s size page does not say whether the inches and centimeters are foot length or shoe length for adults, so we do not run a foot-length calculator.
  • The fit statement and half-size statement come from Sperry’s size page. The Authentic Original 2-Eye and Songfish product pages did not state a true to size rating.
  • Sperry’s UK and other regional pages were not checked, so the UK numbers follow Sperry’s US page.
