Red Wing Boot Size Chart: Heritage and Work Sizes in US, UK and EU

Red Wing is a different kind of sizing problem. Most brands give you a chart and a width letter and leave the rest to you. Red Wing gives you a chart and then tells you, in plain words, that its Heritage boots typically run a half size to a full size larger than you might expect, that its Work boots typically fit true to size, and that the best way to settle it is a fitting in a store. That advice matters more than the chart, because the chart only converts one country’s number into another’s. This guide puts Red Wing’s official US conversion chart and its UK store chart side by side, shows where they disagree, turns the half size to full size statement into worked examples you can use, and explains what Red Wing does and does not say about widths, lasts and break-in.
Quick answer: On Red Wing’s chart, US men’s 9 = UK 8 = EU 42, and US women’s 8.5 = UK 6 = EU 39. Red Wing says its Heritage boots typically run a half size to a full size larger, and its Work boots typically fit true to size. Red Wing London adds that most customers drop half to a full size, but advises staying true to size in women’s boots.

What Red Wing Actually Says About Sizing
Read this before the charts, because it changes how you use them. Red Wing’s “How to find the right fit” page makes three statements. Heritage boots “typically run a half size to a full size larger.” Work boots “typically fit true to size.” And the boots “will stretch and shape to your foot over time.” The page then points you to a Red Wing store, where a Certified Fit Specialist checks length, width, arch height and pressure points.
Red Wing London, the brand’s UK store, repeats the idea from the other side: its boots run larger than other brands and most customers drop half to a full size, depending on whether the foot is broader or narrower. It then adds a line that is easy to miss: it advises staying true to size in its women’s boots.
What the pages do not give is just as useful to know. We found no last by last table for models such as the Iron Ranger or the Moc Toe, no width letter guide, and no instructions for measuring your own foot at home. The Europe page says only that each boot style fits differently and offers a free foot scan tool called Volumental. So everything below that goes beyond those statements is labeled as general advice, not as something Red Wing says.

Heritage vs Work: Which Rule Applies to Your Boots?
Red Wing’s statements split by line, so the first job is to know which line you are buying. Red Wing’s Heritage line is the one most people picture: the Iron Ranger, Moc Toe and similar leather boots. The Work line is built for jobs and job sites. Red Wing’s own fit page says Heritage typically runs a half size to a full size larger and Work typically fits true to size. If a product page does not say which line it is, check the product category on Red Wing’s site, because the same buyer can be a different size in each.
In practice that means someone who wears a US 10 in most shoes should not assume US 10 in a Heritage boot. Following Red Wing’s statement, a half size to a full size larger means the boot labeled 10 will feel like a bigger size, so a starting range of US 9 to 9.5 is what the statement points to. In a Work boot, the same person would start at US 10. These are starting points from Red Wing’s wording, not fitting results, and they are the reason to try boots on, or to buy where you can exchange.
Worked Examples: Turning a Half to Full Size Into a Number
The words “a half size to a full size” leave a range. Here is how to read it across a few common starting sizes, using men’s US sizes and the conversion chart above. These are arithmetic on Red Wing’s statement and nothing more.
- You wear US 8 in sneakers. For Heritage, the statement points to US 7 to 7.5 as the place to start. That is UK 6 to 6.5 and EU 39 to 40 on the chart.
- You wear US 9.5 in sneakers. The range is US 8.5 to 9, which is UK 7.5 to 8 and EU 41.5 to 42.
- You wear US 11 in sneakers. The range is US 10 to 10.5, which is UK 9 to 9.5 and EU 43 to 43.5.
- You wear US 12 in sneakers. The range is US 11 to 11.5, which is UK 10 to 10.5 and EU 44 to 45.
Where in the range you land depends on your foot. Red Wing London ties the decision to foot shape: whether your foot is broader or narrower. A broad forefoot gives less reason to drop the full size, because a smaller boot will also be narrower. A narrow foot gives more reason to drop it. That is a general fitting principle, not a Red Wing rule, but it is why the in-store fitting looks at width and pressure points and not only length.
If your sneaker size is itself uncertain, measure first. Our guide to measuring your foot at home takes a few minutes and gives you a number to compare with any brand’s chart.
Red Wing London Chart and Where It Differs From the US Chart
Red Wing’s UK store, Red Wing London, publishes its own chart, organized by UK size, and it says that all sizes on its site are UK sizes. Here it is as published.

Source: Red Wing London sizing page. The women’s 10.5 entry carries an asterisk on that page that the page does not explain. “-” means no size listed.
The two charts agree almost everywhere. Men’s US is UK plus one, and women’s US is men’s US plus 1.5, on both. They differ in one place we could see. On the US chart, US men’s 13 is UK 12 and EU 47, and US 14 is UK 13 and EU 48. On the London chart, UK 12 (US 13) is EU 48. So for a size 13, the two pages give EU 47 and EU 48. We show both as published and do not choose one. If you are buying a size 13 or larger in a European size, check the product page for the EU number it uses before you order.
The London chart also lists US men’s from 6 and women’s only up to 11, and stops at UK 12, so for sizes outside those ranges the US chart above is the one to use.
Red Wing Widths: What the Pages Show
Red Wing does not publish a width guide on the fit pages we read, so we cannot give you a measurement for any width. What the Iron Ranger product pages do show is that the boot is sold in two widths, D Regular and EE Wide, with no E listed. The Australian page lists D in US 7 to 13 and EE in US 7 to 12, with 11.5 missing in EE.
| Page | Widths listed | Sizes listed |
|---|---|---|
| Red Wing US, men’s Iron Ranger | D Regular and EE Wide | 4 to 14 in the size filter, half sizes up to 12, then 13 and 14 |
| Red Wing Australia, Iron Ranger 8084 Black, D | D | US 7 to 13, half sizes to 11.5, then 12 and 13 |
| Red Wing Australia, Iron Ranger 8084 Black, EE | EE | US 7 to 12, half sizes with 11.5 not listed |

Two takeaways. First, if you are a wider foot, the choice is not only a bigger size but EE at your size, and the EE range ends earlier than D, so large sizes may not be offered. Second, because Red Wing’s advice to drop half to a full size is a length rule, a wide foot that drops a full size can end up squeezed across the ball. If that is you, ask about EE before you drop the full size.
Break-In, Insoles and What Changes After a Month
Red Wing’s pages say the leather insole and cork midsole “form to feet” and that each pair develops a personalized fit over time. That is why a new pair of Heritage boots can feel snug in the first days and then settle. It is also why buying a size too large to “grow into” is the wrong reading of the half size advice: the boots stretch and mold, but they do not shorten.
The following points are general advice. Wear the socks you plan to wear with the boots when you try them. Thick wool socks take up room that thin socks do not. Stand and walk on a hard floor, not only on carpet. Your heel should feel held, with only slight lift as you walk, and your toes should have room to move without touching the front. A boot that pinches across the widest part of your foot on day one is a width problem, not a break-in problem. A boot where your heel slips a lot is too large or too wide for your heel. Try again in another size or width rather than hoping leather will fix it.
Buying Online vs in Store
Red Wing’s own advice is to be fitted in a store, and for good reason: the brand sells many styles and lines and the fit is not the same across them. The Europe page offers Volumental, a smartphone foot scan that Red Wing says takes under a minute and recommends a size for your foot shape. If you buy online without a fitting, three habits help. Read the product page for the line (Heritage or Work). Start from your best estimate using the half size to full size statement above. And buy from a seller where you can exchange sizes, since Red Wing’s pages that we read do not state a return policy for us to quote.
If you already own a pair, the best data is that pair. Check its size and width in the boot’s tongue label, and tell the seller which model and line it is when asking about another style.
Men’s vs Women’s Red Wing Sizes
On Red Wing’s chart, women’s US is men’s US plus 1.5. Men’s 9 is women’s 10.5, and men’s 7 is women’s 8.5. That is the same rule as the difference between the two columns of the table above. Two reminders. Red Wing London advises staying true to size in its women’s boots, so women do not need to apply the Heritage half size to full size drop on the women’s boots it sells. And women who prefer a men’s last can use the chart to cross over, but should treat the result as a starting point and try the boot on, since widths are listed on the product page and women’s and men’s boots may be built differently. Our men’s to women’s conversion chart covers the general rule across brands.
Comparing Red Wing With Other Boot Brands
Boot sizing differs more than sneaker sizing, because lasts are built for different purposes. If you wear Dr. Martens, Clarks, KEEN or SOREL, do not copy that size across. Brands also differ in whether they publish a foot length, a width scale, or any fit rule at all. Red Wing publishes a fit rule and not a width scale, which is the reverse of some brands. Start from your measured foot, read across to Red Wing’s chart, then adjust by line.
What we verified and what Red Wing does not state
- We copied the US conversion chart from Red Wing’s “How to find the right fit” page and the UK chart from Red Wing London’s sizing page. The two agree except at US men’s 13, where the EU number is 47 on one and 48 on the other.
- The Japan column is shown as published. Red Wing does not label it, and it follows the pattern of US men’s plus 18, so we did not treat it as foot length and did not run a foot-length calculator.
- The Heritage, Work and women’s statements are Red Wing’s. The worked examples are arithmetic on those statements. Width information comes from the Iron Ranger product pages on Red Wing’s US and Australian sites. Break-in and fitting tips are labeled as general advice.
- We did not find an official last by last guide, a width scale or a return policy, so we do not give them.

A Simple Routine for Sizing Red Wing Boots
With Red Wing, the chart is the easy part. Decide whether your boot is Heritage or Work, apply Red Wing’s own half size to full size statement as a starting range, check the width you need, and get fitted or buy where you can exchange. Break-in will help comfort, but it will not fix a size that is wrong.
